In the 1850s, John Burleson received a lot of land for his services in the Texas Revolution. He founded a community called Burleson, but the city soon changed its name to Lampasas Springs. When Lampasas County was established, in 1856, this city became simply Lampasas, since all county seats needed to have the same name as their county.
